He mocked me for being “just a deckboy,” so I let him miss the ship.

I work as a seafarer, six months on, six months off. At a port stop last year, a new crew member kept calling me “just a deckboy” and saying I’d “never make real money like him” because he had a business job degree. Constant digs, nonstop. One night ashore, he bragged about partying all night and said, “you’re too boring to hang anyway.” So I let him go. Didn’t remind him the ship was departing at 0600 sharp the morning. He showed up to the port gate at 0635, banging on the fence while we pulled away. Captain shrugged. We had strict leave protocols.
He got stuck in a foreign country, missed 2 months of pay, and had to buy his own flight home.
A month later, word got around the fleet that he’d tried to badmouth me in a job interview, and the hiring captain turned out to be one of my old crew mates. Safe to say he didn’t get the job.
Still just a deckboy. Still sailing. Still grinning.
