Additional context as I feel it makes it even more infuriating.

Me, wife and 2 kids were displaced in the Eaton Fire (Altadena, CA) this year. We lived right up by the foothills where the fire started and while miraculously our rental wasn’t burnt down, the smoke and soot damage meant ~90pc of our belongings were toast.

The 10% of stuff that was salveable and possible to professionally treat for smoke damage (remediation) is now in a small storage locker until we permanently relocate in August.

My in-laws, to be clear, are amazing and have been so good supporting us since the fire…but a couple of weeks ago went to the storage locker to consolidate some boxes the remediation company had packed up after smoke treatment and put a few of their own items in there, too.

Today I went over to pick up a few things and discovered that they had locked the padlock without actually sliding the bolt across. So the door was just ajar. For two weeks. Basically the few worldly possessions we do have left just on display as a free for all.

Thankfully it looked untouched but JFC I was grinding my teeth for at least an hour after discovering it like this.
